This John Deere quilt is for a little someone who loves tractors. It is a traditional style quilt and the top is machine pieced and I am hand quilting it.
The pattern is from a quilt called Ryder’s Star made in 1986 from the book Great American Quilts 1990. I love this series of books, particularly the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. The original quilt was made by the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society as an annual fundraising project.
You can find books from this series for sale on thrift book sites, Ebay, Etsy, and sometimes Amazon. Just search for Great American Quilts book series and you should have lots of options to choose from.
The ones I have belonged to my grandmother. She would find them at garage sales and she had her friends from her sewing group on the lookout too. They often found missing volumes for her.
The quilt in the book is maroon, nave, light blue and white. I found John Deere fabric with the tractors and the logo and decided to fussy cut them for the center squares. The only other John Deere fabric is the green and yellow bandana fabric, which I thought was really fun.
Then I just found simple green, yellow, white and black fabrics. I like the effect of the black in the quilt. I was also very particular about the placement of the stripes.
This quilt is big enough to fit a full size bed. I am going to hand quilt it because I want it to be a keepsake for my son. I have started hand quilting it, but realistically it may be a while before I finish it.
Happy Sewing,
Candace

What a neat quilt with the John Deere fabrics in it! This will definitely be a keepsake for your son. We are in John Deere country here! Thanks for sharing! Quilting at the River Linky Party Tuesday
I love this quilt! I'm using that green bandana fabric as a binding to a baby quilt for my husband's cousin – the front is just a scrappy patchwork, but the backing is a John Deere Flannel. I definitely married into a "green" family 🙂
That is just super cute and neat as a pin! What a great keepsake quilt for your son. I have a soft spot for the green and yellow, since I grew up in a JD factory town!
This made me think of my son. When he was about four he was obsessed with John Deere tractors! I really have no idea where that came from, but he was into all things tractors for a long time! He's not so little any more, but your quilt brought back those memories. Thanks!!
I love seeing your John Deere quilt and can't wait to see it quilted. I've made a John Deere quilt for my great-nephew as well as quite a few for our prayer quilt ministry. (So far, I'm saying there's not likely to be another J.D. quilt–I kind of wore out that theme!)
Your quilt is beautiful. My husband et my son are very fan of John Deere tractors. Where have you fund the different fabrics ? I'll like to realize one.

What a wonderful quilt! The pattern fits the fabric perfectly. BTW, I like your new header photos — makes me want to go to the beach:)

I love this. I have boys and it is often harder to find patterns for them than for girls
