I purchased a new camera about a month ago and decided it was time to accessorize it. The plain black strap needed a little something extra, so I decided to make a cover for it.
This little camera strap cover also has a pocket to hold the lens cap because I am so bad about setting it down and then forgetting where I put it.
Measurements
The main body of my camera strap (and I think most camera straps) is 2″ by 26.5″ long. Be sure and check the measurements of your strap.
The final size of the camera strap cover will be 2.5″ by 27″.
My lens cap measures 2 3/8″ in diameter. This strap includes a pocket for the lens cap. If your lens cap is larger, you will have to adjust the width of the strap to accommodate for the lens cap pocket.
Step by Step
1. Cut Your Fabric Strips
For the quilted top of the strap: cut two strips of fabric 3.5″ by 29″ long
Note – the extra inches account for seam allowances and any shrinking from quilting the two together
Strip #1 – is for the very top, you can piece this together however you like and trim to 3.5″ by 29″ or just cut one piece of fabric
Strip #2 – The underside of the strap top and will be on the inside of the cover
Batting – Cut one strip of quilt batting 3.5″ by 29″
Strip #3 – For the bottom of the strap cover – cut one strip 3″ by 28″
Other Materials Needed: 1/8″ elastic & velcro with adhesive backing
2. Quilt the Top Layer
You will basically make the top layer the same way you would make a quilt.
– Place Strip #2 face down, add the batting on top, and place Strip #1 on top (face up) and pin in a couple of places to hold the three layers together.
– Quilt it any way you want and now is the time to add any trimmings you would like to add. I am crazy about lace, so I added it while I was quilting.
Once it is quilted, trim to 3″ by 28″.
3. Make Lens Cap Pocket
I decided to add a little pocket for the lens cap. I cannot tell you how many times I spend at least 5 minutes searching for the lens cap after I finish taking pictures.
My lens cap measures about 2 3/8″ in diameter. Cut a piece of fabric 3.25″ by 3.25″.
For the Crease: Fold the pocket in half, right side in and then open up and press a two little folds in the back.
– The finished width should be 3″ with the folds. Stitch the folds in place, just a few stitches close to the bottom.
– Turn the bottom of the pocket under about 1/4″ and press (don’t sew it yet).
For the Top of the Pocket: Turn the top under 1/4″and press. Place a piece of 1/8″ elastic under the fold and stitch the folded fabric down encasing the elastic.
4. Sew Pocket on the Strap Top
Place the pocket on the strap top where ever you want it.
– Stitch down one side close to the edge (This will not show because the back of the strap will cover this when it is sewn on). Stitch across the bottom of the pocket close to the fold.
– Now before sewing down the other side of the pocket, pull the elastic tight to allow the pocket to close up tight, but not too tight to cause the strap to curl up. Once you get the right tension, pin or hold in place and sew the second side down. Trim the extra elastic to the edges.
5. Sew the Layers Together
Place the front and back strips of the strap right sides together and stitch down one long side with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press open. Press under both ends 1/2″ and stitch across the ends (shown by the black line below).
Fold the strap back together with the front and back facing each other again and stitch down the other side to close up the strap. Turn the strap right side out.
Your camera strap is finished except I wanted to add a little velcro to prevent the cover from sliding around on the strap.
Velcro – Just cut a few squares of velcro with adhesive backing and place two on each end of the finished camera strap on the inside. The black strap will go between them. This will keep the ends closed so the strap will not slide out.
Lens cap pocket with the cap inside it: This is going to save me so much time searching for the cap. It is so cute and a life saver.
I really enjoyed making this camera strap and might make a few more. That way I can switch them out to keep things interesting. It would also be fun to make a camera strap with Christmas fabric to use during the holidays.
Happy Sewing!

Great timing! I got a new camera a few months ago and every time I strap it on, I think, "UGG" this feels funny. I never seem to have the time to do something about it, though. I love the idea of extra pockets. Thnaks!
Hi Candace! I love this idea and my husband is such a photo nut that I have to make one of these for Christmas! Also- check out my blog – I just (finally) posted my version of the half square triangle I SPY quilt and added it to the Bloggers Quilt festival. I mention you on the blog too since you gave me the idea!
I have a camera strap cover for my Canon but need to make a new one and add the little pocket for the lens cover. I'm popping over from Sew Darn Crafty.
