I am crazy about antique roses and one of my favorite places to purchase them is the Antique Rose Emporium in Independence, Texas. (This is not a paid advertisement, I just really love it).
It is 8 acres of display gardens and beautiful lawns. You can bring a picnic lunch and spend the day there. You can even get married there. They have so many beautiful roses and each one has a story. You can find their catalogue online or you can pick one up when you visit.
One of my favorites is Peggy Martin, it is a rose that was found growing in New Orleans after it had been under 20 feet of salt water for 2 weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Named after the gardener and home owner. You can read the story here in a Southern Living article: The Tough Peggy Martin Rose Thrives in Southern Gardens. This climbing rose gets huge and the flowers are amazing.
I am going to share some of the roses that I have in my little garden. Space is a limiting factor for me so there are many roses that I would love to grow, but I don’t have the room for them… yet.

The weather has been so nice lately with highs in the mid 80’s. This is my kind of weather. Cold temperatures and I do not get along. My roses are loving these temperatures. They shut down in the midsummer when it gets into the upper 90’s and hundreds.
Cinco De Mayo
All of my roses have been purchased from the Antique Rose Emporium even the Knockout roses, which are not antiques. I can’t help it. Every time I visit there, I see so many beautiful flowers and roses and I have to leave with at least 1 rose and a handful of annuals and perennials.
They also have several buildings on the property full of fun little garden accessories and the main building is full of gifts and flower seeds for purchase.
Knockout Rose
The Knockout roses tolerate pretty much everything, but I am not sure how they handle snow because we don’t get any. They are amazing and bloom straight through the hot season when all the other roses stop blooming.
Knockout Rose
Antique and native roses are tough and can survive on their own. They are old varieties that have not been manipulated by overbreeding. They are naturally resistant to pests, bacteria, viruses, fungus, drought and extreme temps.
Cinco De Mayo
Mike Shoup is the founder, a horticulturist and a rose wrangler who started out collecting cuttings of deserted roses found at old homesteads. Self reliant roses that were taking care of themselves. They are not regularly watered, fertilized, sprayed for pests and they are thriving on their own.
Mike Shoup has also written several books about antique roses.
Eutin
He identified and reproduced many gorgeous and antique roses that were almost forgotten. I just love that. So many beautiful varieties that could have been lost, but were brought back to us.
Lafter
I love that these beautiful roses have been preserved and they are so low maintenance.
Another one of my favorite qualities of the antique rose is the smell. Many of the newly bred roses do not have any of that amazing rose smell that is so wonderful. The smell is often lost through the extensive breeding process. However the antique roses have naturally evolved and smell unbelievable!

If you ever get a chance to visit the Antique Rose Emporium, please do. They are located in the middle of beautiful country and the gardens are amazing.

If you are unable to visit, at least check out their website and online catalogue. You can purchase their antique roses online and they will ship them to you. Their online catalogue has beautiful pictures and details about each rose.
You can also find them on instagram @antiqueroseemporium.

My family loves the Antique Rose Emporium and we visit there at least once in the Spring and Fall. It is so nice to get out in the country on a beautiful day and enjoy the quiet and the beautiful gardens full of antique roses and flowers. I hope you have enjoyed a brief walk through the roses.
Have a Great Day!~ Candace

LOL! My reaction to the first photo was "I can almost smell that rose!" and as I read on, you confirmed my thought. Beautiful roses should have a heavenly scent and I'm glad to read that these do. Thanks for the tour.
antique rose imporium is a wonderful place to visit and buy. I had a ton of antique roses when I was in Texas but haven't planted any since I moved to Florida. I miss them. They smell heavenly. I have their catalog sitting right here next to me. 🙂
We have about 8 knockout roses my hubby and I planted in our back yard and I am getting long shoots of dark red thron-filled stems coming out on each one. I looked it up and they said it could be a disease. They seem to not be harming anything. Any ideas or thoughts on that?
