All done and the finished scrappy baby quilt is just what I had envisioned for a sweet little baby we know. Heads up… this post contains a lot of pictures!
I can say that I truly enjoyed each and every step of this quilt. Sometimes certain steps in the quilt making process can become cumbersome and tedious, but not with this scrappy baby quilt.
I love working with half square triangles (HST) and lots of different, colorful fabrics. Her room colors are turquoise, pink, yellow, and orange. I picked out the fabrics I enjoy the most, which are geometric prints, lots of flowers and roses, and cute little birds.
I am a hand stitcher when it comes to attaching the binding on the back. I started out as a hand quilter and the hand quilter in me gets a little satisfaction that at least one part of the quilt is sewn by hand. If you want to see two quilts I hand quilted… you can find them here (my first post) and here (linen tablecloth quilt).
I quilted a grid pattern throughout the quilt. I didn’t plan it that way, it just developed as I quilted along.
I first outlined the diagonal seams, then stitched diagonal lines through the squares and then decided it needed more.
I picked diagonal stitching because I didn’t want my stitching to interfere with the stripes on the back. The backing stripes run vertically so I chose not to stitch vertically. This isn’t a rule, just my own personal preference. If the pattern in the fabric isn’t perfectly straight it is going to make your stitching look off. I just avoid that situation all together. Less stress = more fun!
You can find a pattern to make your own version of this scrappy baby quilt in my Etsy shop. It is called the Rainbow Stairs (Half Square Triangles) Quilt because in that version I arranged the colors in a rainbow pattern.
The baby quilt I am making is the same pattern, but a scrappy version.
The finished size is 40″ by 40″. Each half square triangle block is a 4″ square.
Now I have a question for you. Which do you prefer… making a scrappy quilt or a quilt of one fabric collection? I can honestly say, that I don’t know which one I like better. They both make me happy! What about you?
You can find projects and quilt patterns in my Etsy shop.
I like scrappy for a unique look! Love your quilt! I was inspired by the way you have combined the Low Volume with the solids! Esther esthersipatchandquilt at yahoo dot com Ipatchandquilt dot wordpress dot com
Hi Candace! This is a beauty and a sweety! I love the same things as you, triangles make me happy and all these happy colours are so beautiful! I love scrappy quilts and doesn't matter if the fabrics are from one or many collections – often the more the better! Because I don't have any quilt (or real fabric) reachable, I use also many other fabrics, even men's shirts. Your first blog post is impressive and that quilt very beautiful! Sunny wishes from other saltwaters! x Teje
I rarely use fabric from just one collection without throwing some outsiders in. It's fun to see how different collections can play together. Your little quilt is gorgeous!
I love your little quilt. It really is very happy. I love the scrappy look but 1) don't really have a super good collection of scraps and 2) don't really trust myself to combine them in the best way. But I'm working on both issues. 😀 Love lots of pictures!!!
I love this little quilt. It's so happy and fun. Your grid quilting looks fantastic, and I'm with you on quilting with stripes- keep it simple and avoid anything looking crooked!
Fantastic quilt! I love your quilting decisions and definitely agree about not trying to quilt along with striped backing. I used to be a collection fan, but I have jumped on the scrap bandwagon in the last year or two. Yours is delicious!
Thank you Rachael! Lots of practice. I have spent many of nights cursing my points for not matching up and pulling seams! 🙂 It has paid off though and now I don't have to use the seam ripper that much anymore… thank goodness!
What a precious quilt and the fabrics are perfect for it! I like both scrappy and working with a collection. Thanks for sharing. Freemotion by the River Linky Party Tuesday
Your quilt is adorable! :0) I also like to hand stitch the back of my binding. :0) Like you, I cant decide on scrappy or all from one line, so I say both. :0)
Love your quilt! I go back and forth between sewing with scraps and sewing with a collection. I always figure that sewing with a collection gives me more scraps, so it's a win-win 🙂
I was thinking this sort of thing last night when trying to figure out how to quilt my Dancing Stars quilt. Some of the points are off in random areas so I did NOT want to do straight lines on each side of the seam per row.
Although writing that makes me think I should do line all the way across the entire quilt. I was going to do some outline stitching inside each star block. Hmmmmm….decisions,decisions.
To answer your question, though, I always lean toward the scrappy look myself. Probably since I don't have many complete fabric line lying around. FQ galore? Yes!
I love the solids combined with the birdies and other cheery, fun prints you have chosen for this quilt! Soo pretty.
Such a cute quilt! I love the diagonal quilting with the vertical stripes – nice finish 🙂 I'm just starting out so my scrap pile isn't big enough for a scrap quilt yet, but I suppose that's all the more reason to buy more fabric and get through a few more projects!
Super cute! I love using new fabric collections and I have yet to make one out of my scraps…which are overflowing. I really need to get on that! Thanks for the inspiration!
Scrappy all the way for me, i love HST blocks and the Egg timer version and use both in my quilts. I even have an apron with a border of tiny HST blocks, they finish at 2" this used up all the scraps from 3 baby quilts.

I love this quilt – it inspires me to go learn how to quilt. My mother was a hand quilter, but I think I would rather machine quilt.
