“Stair Stepping Baby” Easy Baby Quilt Tutorial

Baby Quilt Tutorial - "Stair Stepping Baby"
Stair Stepping Baby Quilt Tutorial

I have been playing with the fabrics from the Sweetie Pie Collection by Michele D’Amore for Benartex and I came up with a fun and easy baby quilt tutorial.

The collection is perfectly named because the fabrics are so sweet and lovely.  Perfect for a baby.

What makes this a great project for a beginner quilter is there are no seams to line up.

It is a quick and easy project and makes a great baby gift.

Finished size – 30″ by 38″

Stair Stepping Pattern Placement
  1.  An easy way to cut fabric for A, B, C, D is to cut two 3″ strips across the length of the fabric (42″).

2.  Stack the two strips, trim the selvedge edge, cut three 5.5″ sections.

3.  Stack the 5.5″ rectangles.

Unfold the center of the 2 rows and cut from each center a 5.5″ and a 3″ section.

This will give you 14 rectangles and 2 squares.

There will be one extra rectangle for B, C, and D. For A, you will need to cut one more 5.5″ rectangle.

4.  Sew the center section together by sewing each row and then sew the rows together as shown in the diagram.

Once the center section is complete, use an iron to press all the seams flat and the horizontal seams downward.

Use a rotary cutter and a ruler to trim both sides of the center so the sides are straight and even.

5.  Cut the Sweetie Pie Multi for the top and bottom sections to fit the center. Note:  If you are going to use a different fabric for top and bottom sections, cut a piece of fabric 7″ by the width of your center.

Cut Sweetie Pie – Trim 1/4″ above the line in the middle of the rings (top of the ruler) and 1/4″ below the line at the bottom.  Trim the width of this strip to match the width of the completed center section.

Cut both selvedge edges of the Sweetie Pie Multi fabric this way and sew to the top and bottom of the center section.
