Today I am sharing some of my quilt backs with you. Katie over at Swim, Bike, Quilt is hosting a linky party, “The Other Side of the Quilt” for sharing quilt backs. I looked back through my previous quilts and here are five of my favorites…
Rose Quilt
I love the checkered back of this quilt. I love how the colors are soft and the pattern is scrappy. It is a good quilt for snuggling! Many of the fabrics are used on the front with the dark green solid thrown in as extra.
I Spy Quilt
I am crazy about this stripy quilt back. I made it for my children and wanted it to be as colorful and fun as possible. I participated in two I Spy charm swaps to get enough fabric for the front. I used all of the smaller prints on the front in a half square triangle pattern and kept the larger prints for the back of the quilt.
Rainbow Stairs
I love this large chevron print and used it for the binding and a large stripe on the back. I thought it would be too much to use for the whole back. I like how the large white sections soften a large busy print. The size of the chevron is just right and is a happy shade of green.
For the Birds
This is another quilt with a large stripe softened by large sections of white. I love this print and it works well with the colors on the front of the quilt. Such pretty colors and flowers.
Looking at it now, really it would have looked amazing as the whole back. I’ll have to add ‘large floral prints for quilt backs’ to my idea list.
Complete Reunion
The front of this quilt is made from a jelly roll and a layer cake. I cut 5″ squares from the extra pieces I had left over from the layer cake and made a column on the back. I love using a solid grey on the back of a quilt, but I think it would be too dark for the whole back. So again I like to soften it with a section of white. I guess that is a little of the traditional quilter in me showing through.
I hope you have enjoyed looking through these quilt backs. It is nice to go back and look through my previous projects and reminisce. The back of the quilt is a great place to add extra character.

I try really hard to keep my backs nice and simple and I seem to always be creating backs that are a lot of work! I think I should just go with it since I seem to love the backs just as much as the fronts. 🙂
I am handquilting my first pieced quilt back (chevron across the back) quilt and finding it challenging to keep my stitch length the same on the double thicknesses when front and back piecing collides… but I think it will be worth it in the end… now I will only do that KNOWING my fingers will pay for it! lol Again… happy I did it but being a handie makes it more difficult to quilt. Love the back of the Rose Quilt! The others are quite delightful too! The back of Complete Reunion is so restful with a just enough color to make it great to look at!
Great to get a back view of some of your lovely work Candace. The last few quilts I have made funnily enough have been "built" on the base of the back fabric which has inspired the quilt. Love visiting your blog.
Very cool – thank you for sharing! I just started incorporating a little 'interest' on the backs of mine. Not sure if I will do it on every one going forward -that's yet to be determined – I suppose it depends on the front! 🙂

I love sassy quilt backs! I try to do the same thing.

These are so wonderful! What size seam allowance do you use when piecing backs? Also, that size blocks are used for the back of the rose quilt?
Saltwater Quilts
Thank you Bethany! I usually use a 1/2" seam allowance on the back and press the seams to the darker fabric. For the rose quilt, they are 12" blocks.
