I have been having a blast with mini hexagons lately. They are so fun! I made my grandmother, Peggy, a zipper bag as part of her Christmas present. She loves 30’s reproduction fabrics, so I pulled out my scraps and this is what I came up with.
This bag is 10″ by 10″ and the hexagons are 1″ in diameter and hand appliquéd. This is a good size to use as a small project bag or to store sewing notions.
I also decided to embroider her name on it. This was the first time I have embroidered a name. I have worked with cross stitching before, but not embroidering.
Here is a picture from my Instagram account… Saltwaterquilts… from when I was making all the little hexagons.
They are so cute and my kiddos love to sort and stack them.
Hexagons are fun to add to all types of sewing projects, such as pillows, quilts, bags, ornaments, table runners, the list goes on and on.
I finished off her bag with a little ribbon and a small charm. I am crazy about these little charms. You can find them on Etsy.
Here is another zipper bag that I made with mini hexagons in a Christmas theme. I love making these little bags and plan on making more to put in my Etsy shop.
Tip: Fussy cut images from your scraps to get unique mini hexagons (like the elephant and tea pot in the picture above).
Tip: Put together a project bag to make it easier to make mini hexagons whenever you want.
Fill it with fabric scraps, scissors, thread, needles, and hexagons printed on card stock. I keep the cut and sewn hexies in a little ziplock bag.
Below is my hexie bag and I take it with me on the go so I can work on my mini hexagons whenever I get some down time.
Tip: Hexies are so great to use up your little scraps. Just add them to your hexie bag.
Mini Hexagon Inspiration
Here is a collage of mini hexagons that I found on flickr. Bask in the glow of the hexagon eye candy…
I have been basting hexies for about 12 years. I currently have several tops that need finishing. It seems easier to sew them together than to get them quilted ; ) Beautiful projects here
Oh, those are beautiful projects! I'm sure your gran loved her pouch, so nicely embroidered with her name. I've only been doing hexies since last spring but I'm hooked too!
What pretty pictures! I found you through Sew Many Ways and the Linky Party. I love handwork, as you must, as well. I mostly make scrappy 9-patch blocks. I've even made what I call "free" quilts out of the scraps of other quilts! Happy Quilting!
Hexie Heaven…That is what your house must be. I adore all those cute hexagons. I know you have been really enjoying yourself making these precious goodies. Your mom’s gift is so dear.

So cute. I love all the details – the charm, the ribbon, the name. Did you use a tutorial for the embroidery? I'd like to try that.

Wow! I love all your hexagons! I've always wanted to try those but they look so hard to sew together. Maybe you'll do a tutorial? 🙂

I can't get enough hexies, and your projects are just beautiful! I may have to shamelessly copy you and make a few bags of my own 🙂
