If you want to make a quick gift or a fun project, this mug rug tutorial is super easy and it’s an opportunity to use up some of your scrap collection.
The completed mug rug measures 9.5″ by 9.5″, ruffle included.
Prep the Top and Bottom Layers
Front: Cut 16 – 2.5″ Squares
Back and Batting: Cut 8.5″ Square each
1. Sew the squares together, row by row, until the top is assembled and press the seams flat with a hot iron.
2. Place the top on the batting and quilt the two layers together. The backing will be added later. Trim the edges and square up the top if needed.
Make the Ruffle
Ruffle: 2 Strips of fabric 64″ with 2.25″ width
3. Sew the strips together on both ends to make a circle. Fold the strip in half and press with an iron.
4. Baste stitch around the raw edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving extra string at the beginning and end.
5. Pull the stitching tight to create the ruffle. Tighten it enough to fit the mug rug and spread the ruffles out evenly.
6. Pin to the mug rug with the raw edges together and the folded edge of the ruffle facing the center. Fold a little extra fabric in the corners so they will be nice and square when it is all finished.
7. Baste stitch the ruffle to the top of the mug rug, stitching over the previous baste stitches.
Assemble the Layers
8. Place the backing face down on the front and trim to fit. Sew the layers together using a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving a 4″ gap on one side (noted by the black arrows above).
9. Trim the corners and turn inside out. Press the layers with an iron and hand stitch the opening closed.

Love all your mugrugs. I have done ruffles several times using ruffler foot, basting stitch and bobbin thread technique.
