Here is an update on the progress of my Economy Quilt Blocks. It looks like I have quite a collection going.
The plan is to make a large throw size requiring approximately 200 blocks and each block is a 5″ square. Yes, 200 sounds like a lot, but it’s a fun project when it is broken up into batches.
Working on this project in batches makes the process less overwhelming. They are simple to put together, but can be time consuming depending on how many you want to make.
It is more about the fabric play when you work on a batch here and there.
Economy Quilt Blocks make for a great project to work on slowly throughout the year.
Tip: Whenever you are cutting fabric for your latest project, just cut out extra 4″ squares to set aside for Economy Quilt Blocks.
It won’t take long for you to have plenty to make your own quilt.
The Economy Quilt Block is a good choice to make a dent in your scrap pile.
For this project, I decided to use some of my overflowing fabric scraps.
In my case, the most time consuming part is deciding what fabrics to put together in each block. I take forever to make up my mind, but it feels great to use up so many fabric scraps.
It’s been good practice, arranging and rearranging fabrics that I would not normally put together.
It is a great way to step out of your comfort zone and look at colors and fabrics differently.
These are Economy Quilt Blocks that I just finished assembling.
Tip: Sew them together in squares of 9 blocks. It will be easier to assemble the quilt top this way rather than sew it row by row.
Sewing them in squares of 9 makes it easier to control what colors and patterns are in the surrounding blocks.
These six squares make up 54 of the blocks needed. Many more to go. I definitely have my work cut out for me.
However, I keep on sewing when I think of the final product. It is going to be such a fun quilt to curl up with. My kiddos have already taken a shine to it and I know they will love it when it is all finished.
The next time I share this with you I will have a whole quilt top and I can’t wait!!

You are ambitious, for sure! I love how it is coming out though. And if your kids already love it, think of all the adventures they will have with it when it's done! I dream of someday making a few fab quilts for my future kiddos to use for excellent blanket forts. Keep on cutting! I believe in you!!
Your blocks are so beautiful (and photograph so well against the white background). And thanks for the suggestion to cut blocks for this project as you go from other projects! I will add these to my list!
Wow 200 blocks! That's some work ahead of you 🙂 I've finished up one of these as well though I made it out of larger blocks. I love the colours in yours! And great tip to make it year long and cut out squares as you go.
Your economy blocks are lovely. I seriously need to make some of these—I have seen them everywhere and they are really so charming! I love the fact that you are using so many different fabrics–but they all work so well with each other! I can't wait to see it when it's all done!

They look great! Sewing them into blocks of 9 rather than rows is a good idea.

I love the look of these blocks too. Are you using the regular method or the paper pieced method?
